What is Melanotan 1 (Afamelanotide)?
Melanotan 1, international name afamelanotide, is a linear 13 amino acid analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH). Two swaps, norleucine at position 4 and D-phenylalanine at position 7, make it much more stable and potent than the natural hormone. It was developed at the University of Arizona in the 1980s and acts mainly on the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) of pigment cells.
