Description
Oxytocin is supplied as 2 mg of lyophilized powder in a glass vial. An independent lab confirms at least 99% purity by HPLC and mass spectrometry, and a Certificate of Analysis (COA) comes with every batch.
What is Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a peptide hormone of nine amino acids (Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2) with a disulfide bridge between its two cysteines. It is made in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. It acts on the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), which is found in the brain, uterus, breast tissue and heart. In 1953 Vincent du Vigneaud worked out its structure and synthesized it, the first peptide hormone ever made in a lab, and he received the 1955 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for it.
- Social behavior: pair bonding, maternal behavior and social memory in animal models.
- Reproductive physiology: uterine contraction and milk ejection.
- Stress and the brain: links with the stress hormone axis and with fear circuits in the amygdala.
Findings from animal models cannot be applied directly to humans. Read more in our article on Oxytocin research.
Oxytocin and Vasopressin
Vasopressin is oxytocin's closest relative. The two differ at only two positions, 3 and 8, and both come from the hypothalamus. Each one can bind the other's receptors to some degree, so studies on social behavior often look at both hormones together.
Buy Oxytocin: quality, storage and shipping
Every batch is made in a controlled cleanroom. Mass spectrometry confirms the identity of the peptide and HPLC confirms its purity. Our guide on how to read a peptide COA explains what each value on the certificate means.
Store the powder at 2 to 8 °C and away from light, and keep any reconstituted solution in the fridge. For dissolving the powder in the lab we carry bacteriostatic water. Orders ship discreetly with tracking across the EU, and you can pay by card, Google Pay or crypto.
Questions about Oxytocin
What is the molecular weight of oxytocin?
About 1007.2 g/mol, with the molecular formula C43H66N12O12S2.
Why does the disulfide bridge matter?
It closes the first six amino acids into a ring, which holds the shape the oxytocin receptor recognizes.
